虽然外界普遍认为新秀赛季表现不俗的惠特摩尔在个人的第二个赛季能够进入火箭的常规轮转阵容，但由于亚当斯、伊森的伤愈回归，再加上谢泼德的到来，惠特摩尔的出场时间可能受限，现在的问题是——如果惠特摩尔上场，谁不上场？
如果火箭计划让塔里-伊森和阿门-汤普森的出场时间接近30分钟，而且后者作为后卫位置的替补，前者则是出现在两个锋线位置，那么前锋位置大概还剩下6-8分钟的出场时间，后场剩得更少。
而如果谢泼德也进入后场的轮换，就会进一步占用后卫的替补时间，留给侧翼位置的时间可能不到10分钟，这还没有算上火箭是否会让第三中锋或大前锋——兰代尔或杰夫-格林替补上场。
惠特摩尔新秀赛季场均出场18.7分钟，不过，那是因为伊森因伤只出战了22场比赛。尽管如此，惠特摩尔应该不会再遇到新秀赛季前两个月那样的情况，他预计会获得足够的替补时间来巩固一个轮换位置，甚至有机会争取更多的上场时间。
最后，费根指出，惠特摩尔如果能够在训练营和季前赛表现出色，他或许能成为十月份的惊喜。随着如此多的轮换球员回归，再加上几位伤愈或新加入的球员，火箭队内会有激烈的上场时间竞争，惠特摩尔虽然尚未确定个人角色，但他已经做了足够的工作来争取让自己跻身轮换阵容。
